A broker dealer is an entity that aids investment professionals in acquiring investment products for their clients. In essence, they are the grocery store of investments. We shop there. Many of these “stores” seemed to be stocking perishable items they wanted us to unload on our clients at a premium price. How inspiring! Frustrated with the level of technology available to our clients and the price they paid for services, we were ready to give up. After personally reviewing nearly 50 potential broker dealer relationships, we were impressed by a few, bored by most, and overall sickened by the arrogance of the industry. It was then we were contacted by Kovack Securities.
Kovack Securities emphasized they were a quality firm headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ron and Brian Kovack are a family team and the only father/son tandem elected to and currently seated on the board of the National Association of Securities Dealers. If Smunk Laydon were to be affiliated with them, they would require only this, “We do the right thing!” They described their technology suite and it had everything the large firms had except the hidden agenda. There would be no proprietary products, production requirements, or pressure to sell certain products like mutual funds. They would allow us to maintain the highest level of integrity in selecting securities for our clients. Their motto was, “Simply do what is in the best interests of your client!” They would assist us to provide our clients with great service, technology and research at a fraction of the cost of larger firms; a cost savings we could then pass on to our clients.
Being a family owned enterprise with a creed of “Always do the right thing!” was appealing to us, more appealing than a big name and a big price tag. More importantly, their vision matched our vision for Smunk Laydon. Not only did our ideals match, but Kovack Securities encouraged the personal vision other firms discouraged. They encouraged us to build The Smunk Laydon Private Client Group around “our” vision, one created to ooze quality and integrity.
With the philosophy of larger firms, “Our way or the highway,” Smunk Laydon chose to “gas up” and “hit the road!” Partnering with Kovack Securities was the way to go! |
